AThis challenge is a great way to get students thinking about the items of clothing we wear, whether it is on a special occasion, every day or to make ourselves feel a specific way. Maria Ezcurra is an artist who works with different materials mainly focused around the idea of garments and clothing. She has made different installations out of lost pieces of clothing and kinds of clothing using everyday objects. She came to speak to our class about her work and to introduce this challenge.
For this activity, we were required to pick an item of clothing. On a tag (pictured below) we were asked to write the type of clothing item, (it could be jewelry as well) and we had to describe it in detail. Next, we were required to say who would wear this article of clothing and in what context it would be worn, On the back side of the tag, we were asked to write where the item was made and who made it.
This activity gets students thinking about where their clothing is coming from and who is making it. Is it an artist? A child working in a factory? A family member? Poor women in developing countries?
Partaking in this challenge create a great base for a discussion about different kinds of clothing and how are clothes are made.
