In order to give students an understanding of why we use a sketchbook, the students must first understand how important a sketchbook can truly be. In our future classrooms, we want our students to be passionate about what they put into their sketchbook. The way to do this, is the ensure that the sketch book is personal to each individual student.
The way to show students this, is by introducing the 3 Bs. The first B is for your Bedroom. Students should describe what their bedroom is like. The next B is for your Best friend. Students will also describe what their best friend is like. The final B is for brain. This shows how a sketchbook can be a window into your brain. Everything that goes on in your brain can go on in your sketchbook. The students can make their sketchbook have all of the attributes that they used to describe their bedroom and their best friend.
This way students will hopefully feel more connected to their sketchbook and take it more seriously. In order to begin working in the sketchbook it is up to the teacher to get the students excited about working in them.
