Future Learning: What;s Wrong With School?
I can remember sitting in class as an elementary school student thinking what is the point? This video is so spot on, as a student how is one to be motivated to learn if they cannot see the point in what they are learning, Students are not learning to pay their taxes, or drive a car in school?
How can we prepare students to succeed in a world we have no idea about? Can we train them for jobs that don't exist? Can students feel confident about their education when they are not excited about learning?
What was said about children being able to teach themselves is such a true statement. Let students be their own teachers, we can provide the tools but let them do the exploring. (That's the most fun part anyways)
Sugata Mitra's suggestion for a 3 piece curriculum is a wonderful idea.
1) reading comprehension (students will be reading screens for the rest of their lives)
2) Students need information retrieval skills (this will allow them to follow their questions and find their own answers)
3) Teach students how to believe (I LOVE THIS) give students the opportunity to believe in themselves, in the world around them and believe that they have the power to make change in the world and succeed on whatever route they take, Empower children to do anything they want (if they put the work in the results will come).
This is how we prepare students for the future. We need to teach students to take risks, explore and dream big.
